Youth at DJJ's Broad River Road Complex will step into the spotlight this Friday, October 18th, to compete for the titles of Mr. and Ms. Birchwood. This is the 10th annual Mr./Ms. Birchwood "Bulldog" Competition. Female youth will vie for the title of "Ms. Birchwood," while the young men have their sights set on the "Mr. Birchwood" crown.
The pageant-style event features formal wear, casual wear and talent categories. In previous years, talents have included original poems, dances and musical performances. The competition is an opportunity for youth to learn a variety of life lessons, from how to tie a bow tie to public speaking.
Friday's event starts at 1 p.m. at DJJ's Broad River Road Complex (4900 Broad River Road, Columbia).
Each contestant earned his or her way onto the stage by meeting several criteria to include writing an essay and exhibiting outstanding behavior leading up to the competition.
Media is invited. RSVP to DJJ Public Information at publicaffairs@scdjj.net or (803)896-8345 no later than end-of-day Thursday, October 17th.
